Introduction to ‘Seed Boll’ Indoor Garden Beds
Here is a simple method of creating your very own indoor garden bed. I call it “Seed Boll” for small flowerbeds. When learning how to make your indoor garden bed using small flowers. Remember that all seeds need sunlight, water, and soil to germinate and bloom.
Starting Your Indoor Herb Garden with Color Coordination
The key to this particular gardening project was to mimic growing herbs indoors. Each plant had a specific color that corresponded to its herb family. So, starting with a row of red peppers (RSVP), I planted our favorite plants from our kitchen window. I made three small planter boxes out of old CD cases and lined them up in a triangular shape as my starting point for the indoor garden bed.
Building the First Planter: A Mix of Strawberries and Gourds
The next step in this article series will focus on the first of the three planters I built. The first planter I made is for a combination of strawberries and gourds. I used my favorite plants from my kitchen window: red pepper, gourds, carrots, cilantro, lettuce, and basil. Please look at the last two articles in this series for more information on how I planned to incorporate the additional flowers, fruits, and vegetables into the herb garden bed.
Creating a Water Feature for Your Garden Bed
This gardening activity began two days before I moved into my new apartment. While driving down a nearby road, I realized that I could create a small stream or pond for water harvesting, plowing, and other garden-related activities. After digging a hole reducing one foot to one foot in depth, I filled the bottom with a few inches of loose soil and layered in half an inch of topsoil and compost to hold the plants in place. Within a day, I had built my first planter using my garden bed planter technique.
Constructing the Third Planter for Perennial Herbs and Vegetables
I will cover the third planter I built in this second article series. This planter is for a mix of perennial herbs and vegetables. I started this gardening project to create an indoor garden bed using primarily annual herbs and vegetables. I was able to accomplish my goal of an indoor garden bed by combining the use of long-lasting perennial plants with short-lived yearly plants. This gardening activity became even more enjoyable when I added some garden benches to my landscaping area.
Balancing Plant Sizes in Indoor Gardening
This process has taught me that planting large and small plants in the same container is one of the many indoor gardening ideas that need better thought out. When planning these types of gardens, I suggest you use both long and short-term goals. The most significant error I see with people who started planting and planting everything is that they do not consider the eventual size of their home when growing. Building a small planter that can support the needs of a family is a much better way to achieve the desired results than starting a large project that is very time-consuming.
