An indoor succulent garden will add a lot of color and beauty to any home or business, not to mention rev up one’s appetite! To get started, head to your favorite local garden store and select a variety of succulents, both with different shapes, textures, hues, and heights. You can’t go wrong by choosing what you like, although be careful and ensure that the plants are healthy and have healthy, thick, plump leaves. This is important, as succulents are typically quite low-maintenance plants and don’t need much attention throughout the year.
If you don’t have an indoor succulent garden, it’s not impossible for houseplants to thrive in pots. Many houseplants are very hardy plants that can thrive indoors with the proper care. Cacti and some pines are excellent houseplants, as are some herbs and Mediterranean evergreens. They would probably be a great way to complement an outdoor garden or simply provide some color and interest in your home.
When you’re choosing the right size for your indoor succulent garden, be aware that many plants need a larger amount of space than you may think. If you want a plant that has more than two feet of root space, it’s advisable to purchase a larger pot or planter so that the plant will have enough room to grow. Even if the plant is small enough to fit in a traditional planter, make certain that it has enough depth for drainage before planting it in a larger pot or planter.
Virtually all plants require full sun for optimal growing conditions. But on some days full sun isn’t enough. Some indoor succulents are extremely hardy and do fine in lower light conditions. Other plants like clematis do best in direct sunlight during the day. Be sure to place an awning over your indoor succulent garden to ensure shade in summer.
When you’re ready to plant your indoor succulent garden in a container, select a pot that is as wide or wider, than your potting soil. In order to give your plant the best chance to grow, you should plan to use about half soil and half potting soil. You should also choose a pot that has a sturdy lid to keep the plant from freezing in winter. Be certain that your pot isn’t too deep or too wide; you don’t want your plant to suffer from poor water distribution. Once you’ve selected a good pot and a sturdy lid, place your plant in the pot and gently push it down into the soil.
Watering your plants is a very important part of growing an indoor succulent garden. In addition to keeping your plants well watered, you should also check and make sure they get their daily required amount of water. The water hole should be in the bottom of the container, not above the plants. Containers should be kept filled with water at all times. Make sure to avoid standing water, which can become stagnant and affect your plants.
